The Comanche eventually fell to the Americans and went onto reservations. There once were upwards of 65 million buffalo on the Great Plains, and some 40,000 Comanche hunting them. An 1875 census recorded 1,597 Comanches on reservations, and by 1879 the number of buffalo was approximately 1,500.
